Simple Tips to Trouble Shoot Shared Printer Problems
The main advantage of a network is sharing resources. You may be working with either a small home group network or a LAN or MAN network within an organization. In both of these network scenarios resources other than computers are shared. For example, printers, scanners, fax machines and photocopiers are some common resources which are shared in most of the organizations.
Printers are classified into groups based on the technology they use. Each technology has different costs, print quality, printing speed and noise. There are various types of printers such as liquid inkjet printers; Toner based printers, Solid ink printers, Thermal printers and UV printers.
If you have a printer connected to your computer network it will be easy for you to take prints without any troubles. It will be a shared printer. So anyone who is working within that network can take prints. Printers are peripheral devices which allow you to take prints (hardcopies) of electronically stored documents. Sharing a printer reduces the wastage of time and makes the work efficient. Operating a printer is not a hard task.
If you have shared printer problem what will you do to troubleshoot it? There are various reasons for a shared printer problem and there are various solutions too.
- Check the location of the printer
If you are adding a new computer to your network you may face problems with sharing the printer with that computer. Under Device and Printers choose “Add a Printer” and select the Printer you want to add. If not then add your printer by providing \(computername)\(printername) as the location. Try to do a test print and confirm.
- Check the Server of the Printer
The printer is connected to a printer server. The printer server is nothing else than a computer. If the printer server is disconnected from the network or unable to connect to the network you will be unable to take prints. Check the printer, printer server and network connections.
- Change Firewall settings
Your printer servers’ Firewall may be preventing the shared computers from accessing the server. Change your Firewall settings by enabling “File and Printer Sharing”.
